Science Martyr
EMINENT ANAESTHETIST DEAD WITH MASK ON By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.27 a.ra. RUGBY, Wed. How a doctor gave his life for science was told at an inquest which was held at Manchester to-day into the death of Sidney Rawson Wilson, the eminent anaesthetist. Dr. Wilson was found dead by his wife. He had a mask round his j mouth and it was evident that he had been experimenting with anaesthetics. Witnesses deposed that he was accustomed to administer anaesthetics to himself alone in ]iis study, and to make notes, as far as possible, of his sensations. He knew the serious risk involved, but trusted to his knowledge of the subject. His experiments were principally directed to invent a mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen, which would support consciousness, so that persons might be conscious to everything else except a sense of pain. A verdict of accidental death was returned.—A. and N.Z.
