Dreadful Story of Devastation

TYPHOON AND TIDAL WAVES By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9.40 a.m. TOKIO, Wednesday. OFFICIAL reports from the various prefectural headquarters throughout the eastern section of the island of Kyushu tell a tale of the devastation of coast villages from a typhoon, tidal waves and floods. The damage to the rice-fields from Nagasaki to Tokio has already sent the rice market soaring.

all communication was interrupted all night, but the Government wires are now beginning to work, bringing dependable reports which lead to the conclusion that the first reports of the loss of life were considerably exaggerated. The typhoon, with torrential rains, has now reached Yokohama and Tokio. Along the south-eastern coast, swollen rivers are flooding thousands of acres of the rice-fields, where crops were already ripening. The entire toll of the life, and the

casualties, cannot be estimated, but at present several thousands are missing and tens of thousands are homeless. The damage is enormous. Hundreds of fishing boats are missing.— —A. and N.Z. A cablegram received yesterday from Tokio said: The newspaper “Asahi Shimbum” reports that a tidal wave driven by a typhoon swept the head of Ariyake Bay, Kyushu Island. Three villages were destroyed and more than 1,200 persons were drowned or are missing. To-day the highest tide of the year was experienced. This in conjunction with the typhoon and rain caused all the rivers to overflow. The floods inundated 5,000 houses.
