CONCRETE OR SAND FOR PARNELL BATHS?

BOTTOM BEING CLEANSED COUNCIL WILL THEN DECIDE 'J'HE City Council has available a sum of £BOO for the conj creting of the bottom of Parnell baths. It is quite probable, however, that this year will see the bottom covered with sand and light shingle instead of concrete. What is to be done with the baths is at present exercising the minds of councillors, several of whom visited the establishment this morning. The baths have been emptied, and a gang of men is at present engaged ill removing the filthy looking mess that remained after the water had been cleared off. When a firm bottom is reached a good layer of fine shingle and sand may be put down instead of concrete. Officials connected with the baths are inclined to the opinion that the sand and shingle will make a better bottom than concrete, and that there will be no complaints about the condition of the baths this year, if it is used. A new system of drawing the water required has been arranged, and it is anticipated that there will be no further silting. The work of reconditioning the baths and putting them in order is expected to be completed about the end of this month, so that the baths can be opened in October.
