Great Massacre of Chinese Bandits
THOUSANDS KILLED By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9.5 a.m. PEKING, Tuesday. THE vernacular press publishes a report of a wholesale massacre of the notorious lied Spear bandits and members of the “Heavenly Gate Society” by soldiers belongingto the army of Feng- Yu-ksiang, the “Christian General.”
THE massacre is said to have been a reprisal for the murder of several soldiers by bandits in the northern part of the Honan Province. Itufugees assert that the massacre !s without precedent in recent years. They say it was carried out without regard for the age or the sex of the victims who included the wives and families of the bandits.
Estimates of those killed place the total at between 30,000 and 80,000, but these figures are probably exaggerated. . Rioting at Hankow was prevented by the arrival of military reinforcements from Wuchang. The soldiers are now engaged in rounding up the Communists.- —A. and N.Z.
