A RANGER CONFERENCE

On Saturday afternoon, September 10, a Ranger Conference was held at St. Matthew’s school room. Mrs. Tolhurst presided and, during the afternoon, Dr. Turkington gave a very interesting address. Then two rangers from every company read “Papers.” These were prepared beforehand and were set by Dr. Mcirgart Knight. One was on “Happiness,” and the other on “Rangering and How Rangering Can be Carried Out in Auckland.” I wrote on the latter. When the papers had been read, Mrs. Tolhurst criticised them as a whole, then the conference part concluded and the social part began. We had an early tea, country dancing and games until seven o’clock, then went into St. Matthew’s Church to see Miss Parkes’s wedding. Returning to the school room we held a mock camp fire, and the evening concluded with the singing of “Taps” and the National Anthem. —Bittle Brown Mocassin (Ranger, First Devonport Company).
