CLASH WITH ABYSSINIANS
POLICE AND RAIDERS FIVE KILLED IN SKIRMISH (British Official Wireless. — Copyright) RUGBY, Sunday. News has been received from the British authorities in Kenya that on June 24 last a band of 40 or 50 armed Abyssinians, whose status is not clearly defined, raided the Kenya territory, in the Marabit district, and indulged in sheep-stealing at the expnese of the native population. The raiders, however, were met and at once engaged by a British police patrol at. Bagaga. They suffered a loss of four killed and a number of wounded. On the British side one constable was shot dead and three others were wounded. The Abyssinians then beat a prompt retreat to their own territory, taking with them the rifle and equipment of the dead constable and one baggage camel. In the absence of the Governor, Sir Edward Grigg, the act-ing-Governor at once despatched a large body of constabulary to search the area of Northern Horr for any further trace of the raiders? A few months ago Abyssinian regulars attacked the supply column of a British caravan in the border district, killing its headman and causing other casualties among the British Somali.*In reply to a British representative the Abyssinian Government promised an inquiry and redress for the outrages, but so far its professions of goodwill would not appear to have led to any very concrete results. The British Minister at Adc'lis Ababa has now been instructed to protest against this further incident. It is hoped that this time suitable measures will be taken by the Abyssinian Government without undue delay.—A. and N.Z.
