WHANGAREI HOSPITAL

PURCHASE OF LAND OFF (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI. Monday. In view of the adverse report of the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. 1 oung, the Whangarei Hospital Board has terminated the negotiations which have been in progress for two -ears for the purchase of a section of land for hospital purposes. The board to-day received a letter from the Minister, who wrote that on mature consideration he was satisfied that the section in question, adjoining the hospital grounds, was not the most desirable land in the vicinity for addition to the hospital property, and further that for hospital board purposes he did not consider it worth the money asked. Should the board so desire, the Minister -was prepared to send a responsible officer of the department to Whangarei with a view to conferring with the board and making further inquiries as to the possibilities of procuring suitable land. Mr. D. A. McLean moved that the department be asked to send an officer to Whangarei as soon as possible .o look into the question of further sites. Mr. Murdoch said the board had waited patiently for many months for tho Minister’s answer, although the site had been viewed by the Minister and departmental officers on several occasions, and they were thoroughly conversant with the position. The board’s powers were negligible in matters such as the one under review, and the question had to receive the Minister’s approval. Mr. Murdoch supported the motion. The motion was carried
