TE AROHA CLUB
A HARD FIGHT NOW IN SOUND POSITION (Special to THE SUN.) Not many trotting clubs in the Dominion have made the progress that has been the experience at Te Aroha. For several years the club was without the ssistance of a totalisator, and manfully faced an overdraft of rapidly in- - proportions. Prospects for a totalisator permit were not very bright, and members were faced with a call of t.everal pounds per head. THE SPORTING SPIRIT Still, backed up by the president, vlr. R. L. Somers, and executive of the Te Aroha Jockey Club, with all its vealth of buildings, first class course, i.nd picturesque grounds, it carried on. Eventually a totalisator permit was obtained three years ago, and at that Time the club was in debt to the : mount of .£4OO. By degrees the club has made good, and to-day it has a s urplus of .£063 4s 7d. Last year the club gave £I,OOO in prize money, and made a substantial profit. Sportsmen can rely on an added attraction this year. TAXATION’S TOLL The taxes imposed on the club’s operations last year included: Amusements. £l3 15s 6d: dividends. £o9o 18s: and stakes, £SO. The subscriptions totalled £153 16s 6d; nomination • nd acceptance money, £356 6s; gates, '•'00- and totalisator. £ 1,773 4s S'd. "This year Mr. It. L.
