THE COMPETITIONS

FINAL CONCERT Exceptional enthusiasm characterised the final demonstration concert by prize-winners in the recent festival of the Auckland Competitions Society, in the Town Hall concert chamber on Saturday evening. Bouquets and boxes of chocolates were presented to several of the artists, and the large audience greeted each performance with applause. The anthem, “By Babylon’s Wave,” and the hymn, “Fierce Raged the Tempest,” by the Beresford Street Congregational Choir, were the best items of the evening and were very well received. A vocal solo by Miss Sybil Phillips was warmly applauded and some minutes elapsed before the soloist was permitted to leave the stage. Miss Audrey Perry, the champion elocutionist of the festival, who possesses an excellent voice, gave a fine i contribution Great amusement was created by Mr. J. A. Sharpe in his interpretation of a humorous monologue. The pupils of Miss Aileen Beresford were seen in a Spanish ballet dance. The instrumental and vocal numbers were too numerous to detail, but a duet | by Misses Winnie and Sybil Stevens, and a song by Master David Lunny were particularly outstanding. Several items by juveniles were very well received. At a concert on Saturday afternoon there was a large attendance and the entertainment was greatly appreciated.
