CONFECTIONERY VENTURE Mary Hartigan is a bankrupt confectioner who now earns £3 a week as a barmaid. When questioned this morning by the official assignee, Mr. G. N. Morris, she indicated that her living expenses were considerable. She owed £66 to unsecured creditors, and had no assets. Cross-examined by Mr. Morris, she said that about three years ago she started a confectionery shop in Newmarket. and after 18 months’ trading sold out and rented a shop in Balmoral Road. Mount Eden, for £2 a week. She then had a capital of £2O and owed a considerable amount. After tour months’ hard work trying to get established, she found it a hopeless task. "I didn’t take £4 a week,” said debtor, “and I just made a bare living.” She decided to file owing to illhealth. “1 don’t think you should have another go at business,” said Mr. Morris “I am not going to grant your discharge offhand. You must keep a record of your expenditure and show me how your money is going, so that I can determine whether or not you can afford to pay anything off your debts.”
