He made some great runs, and he
and Kilby worked the blind side in dashing style at times. South also made a name for himself in the threequarter line, and with Svenson, thii trio should give Auckland’s brilliant back division a thorough testing next week. Emerson, a massive forward, vbo tips the beam at well over 15 stone, we* a shining light in the pack, and J. Shearer displayed all his old All Black form in the loose. Porter, the 1924 All Black captain, is as resourceful as ever, but the genial “Cliff” is nursing a damaged knee these days, and he is not the same all-com-pelling personality he used to be on the fringe of the pack. For the winners, J. Shearer scored two tries, and South, Rushbrook and Emerson one each. Nicholls converted one try and kicked a penalty. Gray and Pickering registered tries for the Southerners, Carlton converting one and kicking three penalties. It is safe to say that the Canterbury team that won the Ranfurly Shield would have beaten Wellington, but injury and the necessary rearrangement told their tale. Canterbury, because of the rearrangement of its scrum, was unable to get the ball often, and thus the-backs were hampered. Wellington was a better side on the day, and thoroughly deserved its win. Canterbury had hard luck with some of its shots an goal, and Carleton kicked two posters, the ball sailing above the uprights. His kicking, as a whole, was first-class. The Wellington backs went like : champions for the first 2C minutes or j so, and had Canterbury bustled a-ter that. When the Canterbury inside men j settled down, often they were forced to run across field. Lance Johnson played a good orthodox game at first
