New Company Plays Shakespeare
Venture in Melbourne A NEW “HAMLET” For the series of matinees of “Hamlet” to be given at the Theatre Royal Melbourne, Peter Gawthorne and Joseph Cunningham have organised a company of well-known players. Mr. Gawthorne will be Hamlet, a role he has played on many occasions abroad, and Zillah Bateman will be Ophelia. The King is to be portrayed by Eardley Turner, who has appeared in many notable Shakespearean productions. Mildred Cottell will be the Queen. Ellis Irving landed in Sydney recently from New Zealand, where he appeared with Allan Wilkie and Renee Kelly, and was promptly secured by Mr. Cunningham for the role of Laertes.
Edward Landor’s work as Polonius is already well known, and Ben Lewin will find the part of Horatio much to his liking. Fred Patey will be First Grave Digger. Mr. Cunningham, who is responsible for the staging of the play, promises some highly effective tableaux, while in other scenes rich drapings will be used. Naturally the staging will not be elaborate, but it will be both artistic and dignified. The incidental music is to be arranged with the assistance of Professor Bernard Heinze.
