WOMEN’S NATIONAL RESERVE

THAMES BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Thames branch of the Women’s National Reserve was attended by the following members: Mrs. A. E. Adams (in the chair), Mesdames E. N. Miller, S. A. Hetherington and E. Newman (vice-

presidents), and Mesdames Adamson, Pearson, Grubb, Thornburn, Dalton, G. G. Smith, F. W. Long and Miss Watt Apologies for non-attendance were received from Mesdames Petersen, Liggins, Ritchie, McLaren, Bennett, Gemming and Miss Reid. It was decided to hold annual stalls for the sale of flowers, cakes and sweets in conjunction with a social afternoon on Thursday, October G. The funds obtained from the different projects will be distributed as annual gifts to local institutions. The good wishes of the society were tendered to Mrs. S. Hetherington for her six months’ holiday. THREE BISCUIT RECIPES These fnscuits are easy and economical to make, and are a useful standby for lunch or afternoon tea: Luncheon Biscuits. —Two pounds flour (all white, or lib. white and lib. wholemeal), lib. sugar, Alb. butter, 3 1 cup milk, £oz. cream of tartar, lo'Z. baking soda, flavouring to taste (grated lemon peel is very good). Mix soda and cream of tartar with flour. Then add milk in which sugar and eggs have been mixed. Knead, roll and cut. Bake in a fairly quick oven. Munchies. —Half cup sugar, % cup flour, 1 tablespoon treacle, 2 cups rolled oats, A cup butter, A teaspoonful baking soda, dissolved in 2 teaspoons boiling water. Mix dry ingredients, melt butter and treacle, pour soda and water in; then add flour, oats, etc. Put in little lumps on a tray and bake in slow oven.

Red Cross Biscuits. —One cup flour, 2 cups rolled oats, Alb. brown sugar, 51b. clarified dripping 1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons boiling water. Mix dry ingredients, add melted dripping and soda and stand to cool. Roll into small balls, put half an almond on each and bake in slow oven.
