SPINSTERS’ DANCE
A plain and fancy dress dance was given by the spinsters of Great Barrier Island in Mr. Le Roi’s hall recently, when a large crowd of dancers was in costumes so gay and varied as to lend infinite variety to the scene and to make the task of the judges an extremely difficult one. The hall was prettily decorated with streamers and balloons and attractive dance music was provided. The prizes were awarded as follow: Prettiest ladies’ costume, Miss Blythe; most original ladies’ costume, Mrs. Cooper; best gentlemen’s costume, Mr. Murray. Among those present, in fancy dress were: Mrs. Blythe, crinoline; Mrs. Cooper, grannie; Mrs. Carlson, shepherdess; Mrs. Flinn, witch; Mrs. Murray, Columbine harlequin; Miss Blythe, eat more fruit; Miss A. Bush, good luck; Miss D. Bush, pincushion doll; Miss M. Bush, rose; Miss Paddison, pierette; Miss Yates, lady’s maid; Miss Young, snowgirl; Mr. Blythe, cowboy; Mr. M. Carlson, unemployed; Mr. I. Cooper, downfall of man; Mr. R. Cooper, king’s jester; Mr. Flinn, chef; Mr. A. Mabey, Mephistoplieles; Mr. Mason, Charlie Chaplin; Mr. Mackay, baby: Mr. Moyle, golliwog; Mr. H. Overton, soldier; Mr. J. Overton, parson: Mr. P. Overton, cricketer; Mr. R. Paddison, clown; Mr. D. Walker, bushman; Mr. J. Walker, Mexican.
