MUSEUM MAY OPEN WITH MAORI RITUAL
NATIVES ENTHUSIASTIC BIG ASSEMBLY PROPOSED
r pHE Auckland Memorial Museum. which, it is anticipated, will not be completed for another 18 months, will house the finest Maori collection in the world. In view of this close connection be- j tween the museum and the Maori race, it has been suggested that the official j opening of the new building should be ; the occasion of a native assembly, characterised by full Maori ritual. The proposal has been enthusiastic- j ally taken up by the Akarana Maori ; Association, which body has fallen in j with the idea and will make the neces- ; sary arrangements on behalf of the Maoris. It is possible that representatives of the principal tribes throughout the j Dominion will assemble in Auckland ; for the occasion. The association is also doing its best to cement the tie between the Maoris i and the museum, and in that connec- j tion a deputation from the associa- | tion will meet members of the Auck- ! land Institute at an early date to sug- j gest a basis of co-operation.
