SMALL RATING AREAS
QUESTION OF LIABILITY That it is not easy for some small special rating areas to secure loan money was made evident at Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council, when the Public Trustee advised the council that its application for a £ -,000 loan for Whitehall special area had been refused. Cr. Bruce: Money seems to be hard to get. The chairman explained that lenders did not like small special areas, which were already heavily burdened. Cr. Bee: What is the position if such an area failed to meet its liabilities? The clerk explained that there was no recourse to the county, as the whole county could not be made liable if a small rating area failed to meet its liabilities in connection with a loan. As the Public Trustee could not find the money, Cr. Judd was authorised to endeavour to secure the amount desired, as the special area concerned, Whitehall, was within his riding.
