“A STUPID CRIME”

YOUNG MAN FALSIFIES RECEIPT (Special to THE SUN.) DUNEDIN, Friday. Holding that accused had been already severely punished by losing his position and that he had lapsed into crime* in a foolish way, Mr. Justice Sim inflicted a fine of £3 on Louis Cyril Hislop Gooch at the Supreme Court this morning. Gooch appeared for sentence on a ehargre of forging a receipt by altering the amount on it from 6d to £ 7 -2s sd. knowing it to be false. ‘‘This was a particularly stupid crime*,” said Mr. Hanlon, counsel for accused. Gooch had shown foolishness, for had he gone to his father he could have got the money which he had lost, or. if he had confessed, probably nothing more would have been done than his having to make good the sum.
