WILL AMOUNIS STAY ON?
In the Warwick Farm Stakes last Saturday, the brilliant Amounis split Limerick and Commendation. One of the most interesting racing questions of the moment exercising Australian sportsmen is—Can Amounis stay ? Mr. A. P. Wade sold the Magpie gelding for 1,800 guineas because he believed after the gelding’s failure in the Derbies that he had not the stamina that he had hoped for. To Mr. William, who bought him at auction, Amounis has proved a highly remunerative purchase, as he has won =C 9,142 in stakes.
CONQUEROR OF CHAMPIONS His scalps include those of Windbag, Valicare, Limerick and Fujisan, four of the most brilliant horses of the day. Amounis has won over a mile and a quarter at w.f.a., and in the Wagga Cup, of the tame distance, with 10.5, but those performances do not prove that he is a true stayer. That Amounis holds the Australian and New Zealand mile record, of 1.365,' indicates that he has great pace. He is a most determined galloper, gathering his forelegs beneath him, and making immense bounds, after the style of old Beauford. The Magpie gelding is one of the best backed candidates for the Metropolitan, his admirers holding the belief that one that could finish as he did in the Norton Stakes, of 10 furlongs, at Warwick Farm, will see out the extra three furlongs. His trainer, Frank McGrath, is giving Amounis a remarkably solid preparation, sharp sprints at the end of long, steady gallops. and these are expected to fit him for a severe contest ov?r a distance.
