AUCKLAND BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP

SECOND ROUND STARTS WHITE’S FINE PERFORMANCE The first game of the second round of the Auckland provincial championship foi* the Billiards, Limited Shield, was played last evening. The contestants were M. D. White, holder of the shield, and A. Massey. There was a large attendance, including many ladies;. Both players started confidently. White went o ft with the lead and reached the first hundred with a small m< rgin to the good- He then increased hit lead considerably with breaks of 49, 34 and 42 in consecutive cues. Massey responded with rmis of 39 and 25. White continued to force the play and, taking advantage of good leaves, he gradually increased his lead. When game was called he was over 200 points to the good. Massey played .veil when opportunities arose, but White, who excels on the half ball shot, proved too consistent, and he averaged over 11 points a cue-. Tli:s is the highest average in the tournament so far. He should be the harcli est player to defeat, as in addition to being an excellent player, he possesses the right temperament for matches. The final scores were:—White, 500; breaks of 20, 30, 49. 34. 42, 41, 25, 23 and 44: average, 11.1. Massey, 267; breaks of 39. 25 and 27.

The game this evening will be between E. J. Morrison and C. A. Stevenson.
