STRAND
LAST NIGHT OF “AUCTIONEER”
The big double programme will be screened at the Strand for the last time this evening, so patrons are advised to make the most of this opportunity. Tempe Pigott, the cranky old grandmother ol! Fox Films’ “Midnight Kiss,” develops into a gentle old lady who brings out the finer side of Simon Levi’s nature in “The Auctioneer,” which will finish its run at the Strand to-night. She is a frightened old thing who comes to the pawnshop to offer her most prized possession, an old daguerreotype, as a pledge. The old picture is, of course, worth nothing at all to the old auctioneer, but he gives the little old lady the money she wants, and sends her on her way rejoicing—still in the possession of her treasure.
The title of “The Little Irish Girl,” the Master Pic.ture starring Dolores Costello, which also finishes to-night, was formerly “The Grifters.” It was changed because so few people seemed to know what a grifter is. The author, C. D. Lancaster, explains that a grifter is a cross between a grafter and a lifter; in short, a crook who specialises on swindling methods, but is ready to lift a safe, if necessary. “The Little Irish Girl” is one of a gang of grifters. Supporting the two attractions is the Strand Magazine, containing the latest topical budgets and world news. The Strand Symphony specially features “Irish Melodies.” as a musical interlude, and renders a bright, appropriate programme throughout the evening.
