PAVING ROADS
MOTORISTS MUST PAY HIGHWAYS BOARD HAS NO MONEY Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Motorists have been asked to increase their annual payment to enable more roads in arid outside the city to be paved. They strongly object. To-day they were informed that the Highways Board could find no more money for the purpose before March 21 next, and that there was even doubt if it could meet its share of the cost of the work already carried out. The Mayor said that if motorists refused to contribute more, the board would simply have to close down operations. The City Council could not undertake it except on a basis of additional fees from motorists. Faced with this position, the Automobile Club agreed to reconsider its decision.
In reply to a question the Mayor said that the bank overdraft was about the amount the board’s contribution would come to, leaving nothing to go on with. The only course left would be to suspend, operations while annual contributions accumulated. That meant that paving plants would not start work next month.
