TWO SUBMARINES
AUSTRALIA’S NAVY ARRIVING NEXT YEAR Australia’s new submarines. the Oxley and the Otway, which were built at Barrow-in-Furness, will i/ail for Sydney at the end of this year, and will arrive in March. Engineer-Commander C. W. Bridge, R.A.N., who superintended their building, returned to Sydney by the Orama after an absence of three years. Commander Bridge said that the submarines were built at Vickers' yards, and, nearby, the Orient Company’s new liner Orford was being constructed. It would be launched this month. He witnessed the launching from Brown's yards on the Clyde of the cruisers Australia and Canberra, which were two of the largest warships to be built, their tonnage, 10,000, being the limit allowed by the Washington Conference. The submarines will come out under their- own power by the Suez route, and the cruisers will sail for Sydnev toward the end of 1925. All the vessels will be manned by Australians.
