“CITY COUNCILLOR WITHOUT A MANDATE”
Sir, — I liked your remarks under the above heading- in Friday’s SUN,, Perhaps this will be the first time in the city’s history a self-elected councillor has warmed a seat in the council chamber. It is certainly undemocratic. But, I ask you candidly, has any part of this whole business been democratic? Has the city ratepayer been consulted in the matter? Of course he hasn’t, and yet it is his business, just as it was the duty of his representatives on the council, to acquaint him of all the facts and get an expression of his opinion at the ballot-box. Then again, only ratepayers are legally entitled to vote on a question of rating, yet electors as well as ratepayers voted in Avondale on the question of amalgamation. Then we have the indecent haste of “disposing of the body.” Bodies hastily buried -have been exhumed and examined before to-day. LET THERE BE LIGHT.
