NOT TIED TO GENEVA
INTERNATIONAL LABOUR CONVENTIONS MR. COATES SPEAKS PLAINLY (TllE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. "We will govern ourselves and will in no way tie ourselves to any outside Government," said the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in the House of Representatives to-night when announcing that this Government did not necessarily recognise the recommendations of the International Labour Convention at Geneva. Mr. J. McCombs interjected that the Government should consider them. Air. Coates explained that it was obligatory upon each country to consider if the recommendations would be of service to the respective countries. Air. P. Fraser: In the spirit of the decision. Air. Coates: In no sense does the Government intend to lend itself to the suggestion that it would put these recommendations into operation. We have held this right and will continue to hold it. We will govern ourselves and in no way tie ourselves to any outside Governments. All*. McCombs: Does that mean that you will refuse to consider any evidence taken? Air. Coates: No, I did not say that. This country is as intelligent as any other. We have different conditions and are in different circumstances. We have to use our common-sense as to whether the recommendations will apply to us.
