STAMP DUTY ON APPLICATION FORMS

POWER BOARD PROTEST A claim by the Stamp Department for stamp duty on consumers’ applications for power supply gave rise to some criticism at yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Power Board. The general manager, Mr. R. H. Bartley, said the department claimed duty on the application forms, contending that they were in , the form of an agreement. The forms had since been revised by the board’s solicitors, who considered they were exempt from duty. The department still refused to forego payment of duty and their solicitors recommended that duty be paid under protest and that formal objection be lodged with the commissioner. Mr. S. I. Crooks considered that the regulations were iniquitous. At the recent conference of power boards a strong protest had been made, but so far nothing had been done. The general manager thought that if the question was to be settled by law the other boards should assist as it was a question that affected their joint interests. It was agreed that the solicitor’s recommendation be adopted.
