TAXI TEST CASE

QUESTION OF LICENCES (Special to THE SUE.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A test case was heard in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., to-day, when the Rink Taxis, Ltd., were charged with having an unlicensed motor-car. The point at issue was whether a car kept inside a garage to be hired was in the same category as a car on a street stand. The magistrate held that the definition “plying for hire” applied to all cars owned by taxi proprietors who had their own garages and went out in response to telephone calls. A conviction was recorded and a nominal fine of Is and costs imposed.
