OWNERS AND THEIR BOATS
Auckland’s largest keeler, Viking, will take the water in a new guise next season. Her owner, Mr. E. H. Davis, is now having her ketch-rigged. The new owner of Loloma, Mr. McCullagh, has sold his O class boat Commune to a Bayswater purchaser. Mr. Norman Matheson has sold his launch Kowhai to a resident of Stanley Bay. The L class yacht Otira will not compete in the club events until late in the season. Present intentions are to launch her somewhere about Christmas time. An industrious crew is that of Mr. Neil’s launch Ovaline. A new dodger has been built over the cockpit and the outside painting is well advanced. * * * An unnamed 18-footer has made her appearance at Devonport. Of the mul-let-boat type her presence will be welcome in the racing events. * * * Work on the launch Arcadia is well advanced. The inside is practically finished and the white lias been applied on the outside surface. Easily the first boat to take the water for the 1927-28 sailing season will be Mr. B. Tupp’s auxiliary yacht Boy Jack. The 28-footer is to be put afloat on Friday from Chas. Bailey’s yard. The crew of Coquette was busy during the week-end burning off the under-water surface. The dodger of Oregon and oak that was built over the cockpit last summer has given the owner every satisfaction. A start has been made on the keel yacht Dorothy. The crew was busy during the week-end burning off. One wonders why the owner does not sharpen up the lead keel. The six inches of flat face certainly does not accelerate her speed. Mr. W. Reid’s fine launch Kathryn R. is showing the effects of the good work put into her by her owner. After the usual winter overhaul of the Scripps motor efforts to improve the general interior fittings and facilities appear to have been very successful. A start will be made on the outside surfaces next week-end. * * * Work on the old-time keeler Ngahau is well advanced. The outer surface has been well pumiced down and the standing rigging treated with waterproof dressing. She is just about completed inside, except for the panelling around the combings, which is well under way. A galley has been built in the after end of the cabin, as well as other improvements. Mr. G. Smith will make a start on his 22-footer Mowai next week-end. His intention is to fit a new suit of sails this coming season. Alterations to the sail-plan of this ship has rather retarded her pace, but her owner intends to rig and trim her in similar stvle to the days when the championship of the class was at her mercy. The 26-foot keel yacht Bona, hauled nit at Curran Street Beach, has received outside paint top and bottom. For some unknown reason this speedy little keeler does not compete nowadavs: in fact, even when she is in the water she is very little used. If Mr. Davis only realised the easy prizes that are to bo picked up by one of her type he would perhaps be persuaded to race. A.Y.M.B.A. TAKES ACTION The Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association, as the executive body of the sport, has taken the lead in advocating united action on the part of yachtsmen on the question of haulingout sites. At the last meeting of the association it was decided to request each affiliated club to carefully consider the I question of the provision of both hauling-out and clubhouse sites, and such requirements. ! Each club has been requested to send its delegates to the next meeting, on Tuesday, September, 13, empowered to reach a decision upon these questions. so that proposals may be made to the proper authorities. The association feels that if it takes action much greater success is likely to result than if the clubs made individual representations. ______
