Juveniles at Randwick
Late watchers of the work at Randwick witnessed an interesting trial recently over a sprint course by Rampion’s two-year-old brother and a smart filly by Rossendale is Frank Marsden’s stable, who is being prepared for the Gimcrack Stakes in October. The trial showed that both can gallop. But the filly proved the speedier. Over three furlongs she led the colt by two lengths, and it was only when she was eased at the end that he bridged the gap to finish level with her. They put up a smart time of 37 seconds for the three furlongs. The filly is by Rossendale from Demeter, and cost 850 guineas as a yearling. Her name is Ramora, and if she keeps on the way she has begun there should be a good prospect of her getting back this outlay early in her racing career. The difficulty is to keep youngsters fit once they have attained racing speed on the track, for they are much more susceptible to shin soreness and other leg troubles than older horses
RAM PION’S BROTHER The gallop was a good one on the part of Rampion’s brother, whose name is Ramulus. Like Rampion he finishes well, and although beaten for speed at the outset in this trial, it is probable that he will possess sufficient brilliance to figure prominently in the early races if he stands training. He has developed satisfactorily, and has lengthened out into a fine type of racehorse, much after the style of Rampion at the same age. Ramulus was passed in at 3,ooogns. at auction, and is being raced by his breeders, Messrs. J. and C. H. Brien, and is trained by George Price. Many other youngsters are working satisfactorily at Randwick, and there should be a good crop of two-year-olds for the season that begins in October.
Another who went smartly over three furlongs in was Golden Tunic, a Claro colt trained by Harry England, who is very well advanced in development.
Land £370 were best supported. Starboard Light made the early running from Huikai and Miss Hupana, but the favourite was alongside Starboard Light at the bottom of the straight, and from this out there was a great struggle between the pair. Huikai was three parts of a length ahead 80 yards from the post, when Starboard Light made a dying effort, and the pair crossed the line together, the judge declaring a dead heat. Royal Land was four lengths away third. ATHENRY ALL THE WAY Seven started in the concluding event, Anolo £603, Te Kawana £421. Butterscotch £409 and Athenry £404 carrying the money in an even betting race. A great start saw Athenry lead out, being attended at the end of a furlong by Rarakau, Te Kawana, Butterscotch, Boy, Anolo and Red Comet. At the half-mile Athenry and Rarakau were together ahead of Te Kawana, Boy, Butterscotch and Anolo. Athenry led into the straight from Anolo, Rarakau, Red Comet. Te Kawana and Boy, and Athenry went-on to beat the favourite by a length, with Te Kawana five lengths away third. Then came Boy, scotch, Red Comet and Rarakau. Results:
