NEWS BREVITIES

Cats and Dogs Poisoned.—Careless, if not malicious, laying of poisoned meat along a certain road in Feilding has resulted in the death of no less than eight valuable sheep dogs, the property of well-known drovers and farmers in the district. Cats, including a valuable blue Persian, have alscp been poisoned.

Ship’s Cook’s Death.—R. E. Spilling, a cook on board the Tainui, which arrived at Wellington from England on Sunday, died at sea on August 29 from heart trouble aggravated by bronchitis Pie lived in London and was married. Mr. Spilling, who was aged 58, had a son, aged 19, a steward in the same ship.

Eruption at Tongariro.—Large columns of smoke rose from Mount Tongariro about 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, apparently from some new vent, or probably a renewed activity from some of the older craters. Simultaneously with the new eruption the Ketatahi blow-hole and Mount Ngauruhoe were both sending out large columns of steam.

Airmen in Wellington.—Group-Cap-tain P. F. M. Fellowes and Captain J. L. Findlay arrived at Trentham at 2.55 p.m. on Saturday. They will remain in Wellington some days, when GroupCaptain Fellowes will fly to Christchurch with Captain Findlay. The DHSO machine, which was damaged at Blenheim, has now been repaired and will probably arrive in Wellington tomorrow in charge of Captain Buckley.
