AMATEUR ATHLETICS IN AUCKLAND

DOMAIN TRACK SCHEME The Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held a meeting: last evening:. Mr. W. Morton presiding. The New Zealand Council wrote relative to club members’ registration fees, which must be collected in the interests of the Olympic Fund. The letter also pointed out that the centre was responsible for all outstanding affiliation fees. It was decided to hold a social gathering on September 10, at which visiting cyclists would be entertained. The provincial championships medals will be presented the same evening. It was decided to hold the Auckland championship track, cycling and field events on November 12. A letter was received from the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association stating the annual show would be held on December 3, and asking the centre to keep that date clear, if possible. It was decided to fall in with the request, but, at the same time, to suggest that amateur athletic competitions be arranged at Alexandra Park by the A. and P. Association, the centre to conduct the sports. The president explained a scheme to improve the finances of the centre and the various clubs affiliated in the province. It was unanimously decided to approve the scheme, and a special meeting of executive officers from all clubs will be called to make early preparation for carrying out the proposition. The president reported on a meeting of the executive with Mr. E. J. Phelan at the Outer Domain on Saturday last. The president said he had endeavoured for a number of years to arouse interest with a view' to securing an up-to-date running and banked cycling track for amateur athletes and wheelmen in or near the city. Up to now little encouragement had been offered, but matters had taken a new turn through the enthusiasm and good offices of Mr. Phelan, who intended to carry the matter further as a member of the City Council.
