REREMAI ONE OF THE BEST

TRAINER ENTHUSIASTIC DAUGHTER OF BRILLIANT TAIAMAI “She’s one of the best ponies I’ve had in my stable,” was how trainer Chris. O’Rourke described the New Zealand bred Reremai to a friend before the mare had run in ponv company. That, from the man who had supervised the preparations of Pacolet and Lady Mascot in former years, and Little Lady at present, appeared rather a sweeping statement, but in her last two efforts the daughter of Romeo and Taiamai has proved that such an opinion was not totally misplaced, and appears certain to go a long way in the 14.2 class. Good as Reremai showed herself when she won at Kensington, that form was not generally considered sufficient to enable her to beat the first division field at Victoria Park last week, and m some places comparatively extensive odds were laid. HEAVILY BACKED But the stable soon manifested its confidence, and it did not take many minutes for the followers to back Reremai down to favouritism. On form, it was really a false position, but evidently Reremai had shown something other than mere public form, and the ultimate result showed that the confidence was justified. Reremai was always close and after a furlong had been covered was just behind the pacemaker, Tripod. At that stage she looked odds on, but when the straight was entered several solid finishers showed up just behind the leaders, and from there it was apparent that the finish would be close. Reremai only scored narrowly, but it was a good performance, for she has been raced very sparsely and great improvement can be expected. In which case, the 14.2’s will have a particularly torrid time keeping pace with her.
