A Useful Trio In addition to The Crier and Gold Acre, M. Ryan is paying a lot of attention to a two-year-olcl colt by Archiestown from Miss Floss and the youngster is comporting himself in a very nice manner. Both Gold Acre and The Crier have never looked better and the trio comprise a useful team. Resumed Work
The Catmint—Spinster colt Catonian, who recently was on the easy list, is now back on the Ellarslie tracks looking well. His stable companions, Glenlight and a three-year-old colt full brother to Royal Form, are being kept moving by trainer W. Patterson. Rafferty, who was also in that mentor’s charge, has been returned to his owner.
Looks the Part One of the biggest two-year-olds at Ellerslie is a handsome chestnut son of Gay Lad and Matata, owned by Mr. H. B. Philcox and trained by T. George. He will race under the name of Attalad and if appearances count for anything he should turn out a good proposition. Attalad’s dam is little known as a brood made, for her first foal was Thurlow, born in 1924, but as she was got by Sunny Lake from Marta by Martagon from the imported Bay Ronald mare Ronnetta, she should be able to leave something good behind. His Return Short Although Joy Ride, after a lengthy spell resumed training operations a couple of months or so ago, he has again been returned to the paddock and is likely to remain there for some time. Although Joy Ride was not a competitor last season in the previous term the aged son of Merry Moment —Sanguine contested 24 events, running first on three occasions as well as occupying second place four times and third position twice. In ail probability Joy Ride, like a few others, has seen better days, for he is now eight years old. Will He Improve?
The hurdler Tall Timber has been taken in hand again by J. Buchanan after a spell of a couple of months. Tho son of Hymettus looks none the worse for his holiday and has built up considerably. Last season Tall Timber in his attempts won the Iviliikihi Handicap at the Waipa annual fixture, but although he notched two thirds later on he, in his more recent races, failed to produce anything to warrant including him among those likely to perform with distinction this season. Tall Timber is now seven years old and it is problematical whether he will improve as he ages.
