MOTORISTS’ DASH . INTO ENGINE
CAR TOTAL WRECK OCCUPANTS UNINJURED (From Our Oxen Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. Mr. James Pilkington, of Kamo, anc*. passenger, Mr. A. Jones, in a motor-car. had a miraculous escape at McLeod*' Crossing about 8 o’clock last evening. Mr. Pilkington was going in the direction of Hikurangi and failed to notice a coal train running to Wlianga rei, the car charging the drivinwheels of the engine and bein° smashed utterly to wreckage. The engine, did not come off unscathed. the braking gear being damaged and the footplate step knocke off. ‘ , , The side curtains of the car wei up. . . , The motorists were uninjured ancame back to Whangarei on the train. The crossing is a very dangerou one and the local bodies of the distrh have been agitating for its removal fosome tim^-
