HEAVY COMPETITION IN FIRE INSURANCE
STATE’S DIFFICULTIES
(THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday.
The Hon. W. Nosworthy, in piloting the State Fire Insurance Department estimates through committee, confessed to the House of Representatives that the department had had anything but a wonderful year, and was facing heavy competition from outside insurance concerns.
Mr. D. G. Sullivan, Avon: Is it fair that these companies should engage in such competition when they hold so much of our reinsurances?
Mr. Nosworthy: Well, it is hard to avoid it. They have a good hold on insurance the world over.
Mr. M. J. Savage: I would rather make other companies keep step with the Government office. Mr. Nosworthy: We are out for business and have our canvassers out. We increased our premiums by £24,000 last year.
