BENEFIT CONCERT

HELP FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS The Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association has organised a special concert in aid of ex-soldiers in reduced circumstances, which is to be presented in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening next. The proceeds are to be devoted to the assistance of partially-disabled soldiers who are unable to do heavy work and without pensions. Nothing has been left undone to make this concert a big success and the prominent artists of Auckland are to contribute to an excellent programme that has been arranged. The Auckland Artillery Band will also render selections. MUNICIPAL BAND CONCERT AT ZOO The Municipal Band plays at the Zoological Park on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, A fine musical programme includes the bright marches, “Merry of Heart,” “Cadiz,” and “Leonidas,” overture “Ruy Bias,” Mendelssohn’s wonderful tone poem, a popular selection from Gounod’s “Faust.” a grand selection from Wagner’s, “The Valkyrie,” Together with hymn tunes and other tuneful items. For the making of “Annie Laurie,” Lillian Gish’s latest starring picture for Metro-Goldw3*n-Mayer it was necessary to hire an entire knitting mill in ojxler that some thousands of yards of special cloth could be woven in accurate copies of twenty-six different Scottish plaids to clothe the hordes of warriors who took part in the picturesque battle and clan-gathering scenes in the picture. The plaids—a different one for every clan —were copied from originals, and a special loom was required for each one. Many Highland villages, and towering Scottish strongholds, including the historical Maxwellton Castle, were reconstructed for the picture, and to add to the authenticity of the scenes a herd of genuine Scottish cattle were brought especially from the ranch of H.R.H. Prince of Wales, in Canada. The masculine lead in “Annie Laurie” is taken by Norman Kerry, and the cast includes Hobart Bosworth, Russell Simpson, Creighton Hale, Brandon Hurst, David Torrance, Patricia Avery, Joseph Striker and Frank Currier.

May McAvoy’s first starring picture for Warner Brothers’ new season programme will be “Slightly Used,” a story by Melville Crosman. Miss McAvoy is at present playing opposite A 1 Jolson in “The Jazz Singer,” and as soon as this special is completed, she will begin work on “Slightly Used.”
