“CLOSE TO THE WIND”

YOUNG MAN’S CAREER PLACED ON PROBATION GORDON MACDONALD GOR-'-T DON, a young married man who was said to have been “sailing close to the wind,” for some time, was placed on probation by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. He appeared for sentence at the Police Court on fouir charges of theft and false pretences involving £32 Is 2d. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused had no previous convictions, but he had sailed close to the wind. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said he did not have muich confidence in the man, but he recommended probation. The magistrate placed him on probation for two years and warned him that he wouild get at least six months’ gaol if he ignored Mr. Campbell’s instructions. He was also ordered to make restitution.
