Jazz “Mikado” Presented in Berlin Theatre
Germans Bring It Up-To-Date A VERY GAY SHOW By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright BERLIN, Thursday. Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Mikado” brought up-to-date and presented in the form of a revue, has been presented in Berlin. Nankipoo, wearing Oxford bags, a sky-blue, double-breasted, brass-but-toned blazer, is represented as the son of an American sugar king, whose father desires him to marry Katisha, the daughter of a fruit king, to enable a marmalade trust to be formed. The performance is interspersed with dancing and gymnastics by American Jackson boys in sailors’ garb. Yum Yum and her companions give an ample display of Western silk garments beneath kimonos. When the curtain rises on Yum Yum’s apartments, one of the ladies in attendance has apparently stepped out of a bath, and stands with her back to the audience, making the finishing touches with a large powderpuff. The music is often jazzed. The ballets introduce the Charleston. Only the most pious Savoyard would object to the changes. Others laugh and enjoy them, if with a sigh of regret.— A. and N.Z.
