BIG STORM IN MANAWATU
TOWN STREETS FLOODED Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Thursday. A SEVERE electrical disturbance was experienced in the . Manawatu district yesterday, lasting nearly all the afternoon. Lightning played all round the countryside, rain tell in torrents, and all varieties of lightning were witnessed. Streets in Palmerston North were flooded to a considerable depth, and telephone services were dislocated. The major damage was caused by lightning striking the lines of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board. At the Tematai sub-station one switch was completely wrecked. Lightning struck the lines at Fitzherbert and other places. It was five o’clock this morning before the last repairs were made to the lines. From the recording instruments at the board’s station at Bunnytliorpe it appears that the lightning started in the vicinity of YVhakarongo, then travelled to Bunnytliorpe, and Kairanga, Palmerston North, Awapuni and Linton.
Despite the deluge in Manawatu, there was practically no rain Mangahao, where there was a shortage of water to-day. Some steam plants are assisting Mnngahno
