SATURDAY’S HOCKEY
IMPROVED PLAY EXPECTED FORECAST OF MATCHES The Devonport Shield hockey competition will be advanced a further stage at Remucvra on Saturday, when a higher standard of play than has been possible during the last six weeks or so should be exhibited. The exceptionally wet season has resulted in adverse playing conditions and particularly rough grounds, consequently the standard of play in all grades has been lower this year than for several seasons, and except for a few instances there has been a general lack of science. Last Saturday’s games were played upon reasonably dry grounds, with a noticeable improvement both in speed and stickwork, and if the weather holds clear over the week-end a further improvement may be looked for. CAN COLTS BEAT ARETA? Areta is set down to meet Somerville Colts on No. 2 ground at 2 p.m. The meeting should prove interesting, as the sides have not crossed sticks hitherto. On the respective showings during the season Areta should bring off a victory. University Colts will make a determined effort against Wesley, although, on the season’s form, Wesley is due for a win. The Colts have given a greatly improved account of themselves lately, while Wesley has not played good hockey. Unless Epiphany is able to spring a surprise there can be only one ending to its encounter with St. Luke’s. Although weakened by misfortune and accident St. Luke’s has still a lot of kick, and on a dry ground can be relied upon to put up a keen fight. The eagerly-awaited contest between Varsity seniors and Somerville has been postponed for a week.
