N.Z. CUP TRIAL

SPEED KINGS MEET PROSPECTS OF CANDIDATES NON-ASPIRANTS APPEAL YEW ZEALAND Cup horses desirous of having a trial will get the opportunity at Wellington in the ten-furlong heat—2.46 limit —which has been scheduled for their special benefit. Interspersed among Cup aspirants are a few pretty sudden customers, which promise to make things particularly interesting. Ten aspirants for 3 927 New Zealand Cup honours have been handicapped by Mr. Brinkman for the trial run over ten furlongs, which was placed on the Wellington spring programme for their benefit. The Cup candidates have been assessed at such a figure as to encourage them to have a flutter in the event. Six other pacers, not engaged in the big event in November are also in the field for September 17, and promise to make the race decidedly interesting. A few of this brigade are exceedingly smart customers at the shorter distance, and the two-mile guns will require to be well forward to silence the opposition. The distance is one that will put both sections to the test, and only those in the best of condition will see it out to the bitter end. BACK-MARKERS WELL TREATED In placing the back division on a 2.42 mark, slightly better than 2.10 to the mile, the adjustor has not made their task impossible. Peter Bingen, Prince Pointer and Acron are a speedy lot, the former being brilliant over this particular distance. Prince Pointer and Acron will probably be in need of a race or two, but Peter Bingen was in good form when the recent season concluded, and will have the advantage of recent racing. Three more of the dashing type in Jack Potts, Ahuriri and Bessie Logan are placed on 2.43, and if all were at the top of their form would be a formidable trio. Bessie Logan had to be eased after the National fixture, and this will perhaps discount her prospects, but Ahuriri should be coming along the right way, while Jack Potts holds a rosy prospect. He is a brilliant gentleman and when under way has a torrent of speed. A HARD PROBLEM What a puzzling crowd on the 2.44 peg! Black Admiral, Man-o’-War, Sea Pearl and Queen’s Own. representing the Cup team, with St. Maura and Bell Harold, two recent winners, and the disappointing Concliff to do battle for the non-Cup aspirants. Of those who claim an engagement in the Dominion’s chief event, Queen’s Own made the most forward showing at Addington recently, but if Sea Pearl is making the necessary improvement she will keep the best of them busy. But the other side will present a bold front, and particularly in St. Maura will they have a solid representative. TWO HARD HEADS On a 2.45 mark is a nice pair in Audacious and Talent. The former won splendidly at Christchurch on the opening day of the National carnival, and will be all the better for the race. He is one of the solid type, and if the elect of O. Hooper’s pair will be a popular selection. But Talent, that consistent performer, over all distances, must not be forgotten, and at this journey it will take a good one to head him off. In the Farewell at Addington Frost’s charge seperated Bell Harold and St. Maura at the tape, and there is reason to believe he will go one better next time up. Holly Boy has the end, 2.46, to himself, but looks to be held safe by the pair behind him. At this jLincture it looks as though Hooper’s elect, Jack Potts and Peter Bingen of the Cup brigade, and Talent, St. Maura and Tomkinson’s elect of the opposition, will fight out the issue.
