Promising Auckland Three-Year-Old

The Papakura-trained In the Shade is down to compete in the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes, after being given a run at Marton. The Eclipse Stakes comes up for decision on the second day of the Wanganui meeting next week.

Since being imported from Sydney the son of Australian Sun and Violet PI. has shown his worth on the tracks round about Auckland. As a two-year-old last season, out of eight starts In the Shade notched three wins and also registered a second and a third place. This Australian importation commenced his career at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival, wheer he failed to gain a situation in two starts. However, a few weeks later, with seventeen pounds pull in the weights, he accounted for the Calliope Handicap on the opening day of the Takapuna gathering, beating Paganelli by a head. On the second day of the same meeting Paganelli had his revenge, for when meeting In the Shade on eleven pounds better terms he prevailed over that gelding in the Hobson Handicap by a head margin, Speechless occupying third berth on each occasion. About a month later In the Shade was seen to further advantage at Te Aroha, where he won the Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, with 8.5 on his back, in the good time of 1.2.3-5, and on the second' day of the fixture he followed it up by scoring an easy victory in the Electric Handicap, six furlongs, and with the steadier of 9.2 he ran the distance in 1.17 3-5. Since then In the Shade has had two outings, running third in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and being unplaced in the Avondale All Aged Stakes, In which he met with some interference. In the Shade’s record presages good things this season, but it may be expecting a little too much of him to defeat some of the speed merchants in the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes, though he should run prominently.

On his two-year-old performances it may be taken that In the Shade is

going to do a lot better this season. Probably he will be allowed to take his chance in the Wanganui Guineas next Thursday. His pilot in the open sprint at Marton to-morrow will be T. Green. In the Shade carries the racing livery of Mr. W. S. Glenn, M.P., one of the famous 1905 band of All Blacks. A

win for the Australian-bred gelding either at Marton or Wanganui would be extremely popular, for both places are in the Rangitikei constituency. Marton is the centre of the electorate, and a good slice of Wanganui is also in the Rangitikei electorate.
