Marathon Swim

WATER TOO COLD TWO HUNDRED GIVE UP By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright TORONTO, Wednesday. The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers in the 21mile swim for prizes totalling 50,000 dollars, of which Mr. William Wrigley, junr., and the Canadian National Exhibition each contributed 25,000 dollars. Only 50 remained in the water after six hours, although 250 started. Many favourites retired early, George Young among the first of them, due to cramp. E. Keating followed, and Harold Waters (New Zealand) quit early. So also did Byron Summers, John O’Halloran and George Clayton, but Ernst Vierkoetter led by three-quarters of a mile after 14 miles. George Michel was in the sixth place.
