MOUNT ALBERT BOROUGH UNEMPLOYED
Sir, — The Mayor of Mt. Albert said at the last meeting of the council: “We are carrying out more work than on any previous occasion and employing more labour in proportion to our valuation than any other borough in Auckland.” I would again ask him or the engineer: How many names of men employed are on the borough’s paysheets? Work and men engaged by contractors do not, and should not, count in creating a number. With so much urgent work requiring to be done why are not more men now employed in these days of stress and poverty? If any of the other boroughs or the city of Auckland assessed the number of their workers by listing those who are employed by contractors then the borough of Mt. Albert would lag woefully in the rear. One question more: How many of the men employed by borough and I contractors are residents and ratepayers of the Borough of Mt. Albert? I am indeed sorry to have again to approach your valuable paper on this, to my mind, unfeeling attitude of the Mt. Albert Borough. ARGUS.
