CRUISING CLUB’S NEW QUARTERS
REQUEST TO HARBOUR BOARD ST. GEORGE’S BAY BOATSHEDS The Victoria Cruising Club made formal application to the Auckland Harbour Board, which met yesterday, for permission to use a site at the foot of» New Street, Ponsonby, as the future position for its clubhouse. In view of the club having been served with a three months’ notice to quit its present quarters a deputation waited upon the chairman of the board, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, asking that the New Street site be made available for the club. The deputation was advised to apply to the board and the request was received yesterday. On the motion of the deputy-chair-man, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the question was referred to the board-in-com-mittee, the harbourmaster to report. Reporting on the boatsheds at St. George’s Bay, the engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, stated the revenue from that source during the past four years had been £1,030. The actual cost of maintenance in the period had been £865, leaving £165, or approximately £4O a year, to meet interest and depreciation. The valuation of the sheds was £1,674. The amount written off for depreciation was equivalent to £64 a year. Thus the net return was not even sufficient to meet depreciation and the present rents were insufficient to cover reasonable charges. The skids needed a thorough overhaul, which would involve the expenditure of from £1,200 to £1.300, and the board was asked to consider the whole question of the leasing of these facilities. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
