TRAFFIC TEST CASE
SCOPE OF A LICENCE DECISION AT GREYMOUTH Press Association. GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. The Greymouth traffic inspector has proceeded against the British Imperial Oil Company, Ltd., for permitting a motor-lorry to be used in Greymouth without a heavy-traffic licence being obtained. It is admitted that the lorry was registered at Christchurch. Defendant’s contention was that the licence was valid on the Coast, which view was supported by the Christchurch City Council. Mr. Meldrum, S.M., said the licence should have been taken out also at Greymouth, as Christchurch and Greymouth were not in the same heavytraffic district. The case was a test and a heavy penalty was not asked for. Defendants were therefore convicted and fined £2 with costs. The decision affects the company’s lorries at Ashburton and Timaru.
