LIFT FATALITY AT POST OFFICE

CORONER’S VERDICT A verdict that Thomas R. A. Smith, a postman, aged 38, was accidentally killed through being crushed by a lift he was operating at the Post Office on the morning of August 17, was recorded by the coroner, Mr. W. R. McKean, at the inquest yesterday. The inspector of machinery, who examined the lift after the accident, said that he found it in good order. The controlling handle was of an unusual type, in that it automaticilly shut off the power when the operator’s hand was released from it. The control was sluggish of action, and allowed the elevator to rise about 12in. if the person controlling it released the handle without definitely swinging the lever to the neutral position. Other evidence showed that Smith had not had much experience in working this particular elevator. From the position of deceased’s body it could only be assumed that he slipped and fell, but no one saw the actual happening.
