HORSEMAN’S RESCUE

IN MURIWAI SURF THREE MEN SAVED Hiding into the surf at Muriwai Beach on Sunday Mr. Bert Fletcher saved from drowning three men who had been swept off their feet while setting a net. Messrs. Hilton, Richards, and Tibby of Waimauku, had just laid the net above the creek on the beach. Hilton, who was furthest from the shore, was swept off his feet by large waves, and the other two men got into difficulties through going to his assistance The net became entangled round Hilton, who was the only swimmer, and a triple fatality seemed certain when Mr. Bert Fletcher, an athlete and representative footballer, rode along the beach. He plunged his horse into the breakers and one by one brought the three men ashore. Once the horse was swept off its feet. Hilton was unconscious when he was rescued, but he had recovered yesterday.
