THE MORNINGSIDE RESERVE
A GREAT deal of correspondence has reached The Sun regarding the Morningside Reserve, following an article in these columns urging that action should be taken to convert this fine area into a playing ground. There is only one opinion expressed—that the inactivity of those who have control ol this ground, in allowing it to grow rank with noxious weeds when Aucklanders so sadly lack playing areas, is a reproach on their administration. As has been pointed out in The Sun’s news columns, deputation after deputation lias waited on the Mount Albert Borough Council, and yet, after ten years, no action has been taken to clean up the reserve. Two members of the. council, Councillors Brigham and Langley, are said to have been trying to interest, their colleagues in the reserve for the past nine years, but without success. The time h» arrived when the need for action should he more forcibly pressed upon this council which refuses to recognise either the worth of this reserve or the need for increased areas for recreation. In a letter to The Sun to-clay, yet another correspondent, Mr. R. A. Anderson, seeks to stir the council to action. Looking all over Auckland, lie has see* no land which he considers can approach that of the Morningside Reserve as a potential playing ground, with its wonderful natural amphitheatre, and its dimensions, capable of providing three or four football fields, besides other playing areas. But at present the gorse grows ten feet high, and the ground is a nursery for the distribution of noxious weeds. It is suggested that the various sports bodies which are interested in the securing of further playing areas should combine to make representations to the Mount Albert Borough Council. . The idea is a good one and should be supported.
