AUCKLAND V WELLINGTON WIN FOR SOUTHERNERS The annual telegraphic chess matc h between Auckland and Well ngton, 2» players a side, which was commenced last Saturday week, concluded on Saturday night. Eight games were finished, and 12 have still to be adjudicated upon. Of those finished, Wellington scored 6* to Auckland’s 1?., but it is expected that the Auckland Club will gain another seven points from the remaining games, and the final result should be about lli to in Wellington’s favour. Wellington was without the services of Messrs. Barnes. Fouhy and Godtschalk, who were on the sick list, while Auckland was without Messrs. Moir, Roberts. Miles, ArapoiX, Miller and Karte, who, owing to sickness, anti other reasons, were unable to compete. However, on the whole both cities were represented by strong teams. Mr. W. J. Ogle acted as umpire for Wellington, while Mr. J. A. Glasgowlooked after Auckland’s interests. The operating was in the experienced hands of Messrs. F. W. Rivers, Wellington, and R. McKenzie, Auckland, whose good work enabled the game*, to proceed with the minimum of delay.
