KISSING IN ITALY

“GIN A BODY MEET A BODY” According to Italian law, a kiss does not constitute an offence, and a ruling to this effect was given by the Tribunal at Riccione, a seaside resort on the Adriatic. Two years ago a beautiful young woman called at the railway station at Riccione for her left luggage. The baggage clerk, a passionate Sicilian, kissed her. Her husband punched the clerk’s head, and litigation followed. A court acquitted the clerk on the ground that, as a kiss is a form of salutation in Italy, even if given to a member of the opposite sex, it is not an offence. As a result of this decision a kissing epidemic was threatened by railway baggage clerks in Italy; and the case was appealed against and lagged on for two years. Finally, the Court of Cassation at Ravenna admitted that the kissing clerk was to blame: but allowed him to go free owing to the time that had •lapsed since the incident.
